<image:title>Senpai James - BRUCE LEE</image:title>
<image:caption>I first started karate like many others after watching Bruce Lee films. A good friend and neighbour talked about his karate lessons and I wanted to see what he was excited about. I plucked up the courage to watch from outside the dojo (training hall). Watching these men and women train so hard they sweated buckets, but then took time to slow the pace down to perform kata (formal exercise) with such grace but still so powerful.</image:caption>

<image:title>Senpai James - SENSEI ROY & LEYTON DOJO</image:title>
<image:caption>At the end of the lesson I approached the instructor Sensei Roy Banton to see if I could join. He said the next beginners class started in two weeks. Those two weeks went so slow but I still watched the lessons eager to learn as much as possible. My time came. I entered the dojo wearing my pure white karate Gi (suit) looking at everyone else who was eager to learn. Then Sensei Roy arrived he filled the door frame. That night changed my life and the rest is history.</image:caption>

<image:caption>During the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 we couldn’t train in the dojo, however I got my students training online via Zoom sessions. As soon as we were allowed to train outside, we did. Luckily the weather was amazing and we continued to train with heart and spirit. As time passed we were advised by Sport England that we could train back indoors. Following Government guidelines and advise from Sport England we continue to train in our dojo.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Kyokushin Karate - MAS OYAMA</image:title>
<image:caption>Kyokushin (極真) was founded in 1960 by Korean-Japanese Masutatsu Oyama, better known as (Sosai) Mas Oyama. "Kyokushin" is Japanese for "the ultimate truth". It is a full contact style rooted in a philosophy of self-improvement, discipline and rigorous training. This form of intense training in Kihon (or basics) was based on Oyama’s own period of primarily solitary training at the age of 23 during which he overcame isolation, pain, and cold. This conditioning meant that when Oyama returned he seemed invincible so he began a tour where he fought all-comers. He won every single fight.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Kyokushin Karate - SOSAI</image:title>
<image:caption>Oyama hand-picked instructors who, having achieved a level of excellence in Kyokushin, were also able to promote and popularise the style to gain new members. When Oyama chose an instructor to open a new dojo they would move to the town and demonstrate their karate skills in public places. After that, word of mouth would spread through the local area until the dojo had a dedicated core of students.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Kyokushin Karate - STEVE ARNEIL</image:title>
<image:caption>Oyama also sent instructors to other countries and this included Steve Arneil who came to Great Britain. Many students, including Arneil, travelled to Japan to train with Oyama directly. In late 1965, Arneil and Bob Boulton founded the British Karate Kyokushinkai (BKK) organisation. From 1968 to 1976, Arneil was the Team Manager and Coach for the All Styles English and British Karate team which, in 1975/76, became the first non-Japanese team to win the karate World Championship. Hanshi (exemplary teacher) Steve Arneil is still head of the BKK and IFK.</image:caption>

<image:title>Emblem Meanings - KANKU</image:title>
<image:caption>The symbol of Kyokushin Karate is the Kanku, which is derived from Kanku Dai kata, the Sky Gazing form. In this kata, the hands are raised and the fingers meet to form an opening through which the sky is viewed. The top and bottom points of the Kanku represent the first fingers of each hand touching at the top and the thumbs touching at the bottom, symbolising the peaks or ultimate points. The thick sections at the sides represent the wrists, symbolising power. The centre circle represents the opening between the hands through which the sky is viewed, symbolising infinite depth. The whole Kanku is enclosed by a circle, symbolising continuity and circular action.</image:caption>

<image:title>Training Overview - Etiquette & Entering Dojo</image:title>
<image:caption>Karate begins with respect and etiquette. That includes entering the dojo. It is traditional to put down your bags and then bow, crossing your arms in front of you and moving them down parallel to the ground and saying ‘Osu!’ looking forward (see image). Once in the dojo it is customary to greet everyone using the same arm gesture and saying Osu! Always start with the most senior grade in the room. Once everyone is greeted change if you are not already and warm yourself up, stretch and practice. Watch others if you are not sure. When ready, Senpai will invite everyone to line up in grade order for training to begin.</image:caption>

<image:title>Training Overview - Warm up</image:title>
<image:caption>The class begins with everyone standing in a line in fudo dachi stance. Senpai will greet everyone and often start the session with a warm up. This might include running, squats, press-ups and stretches.</image:caption>

<image:title>Training Overview - Kihon</image:title>
<image:caption>Kihon is the basic moves and stances in Kyokushin. This is performed in unison to counting. Kiai (spirit shout - Osu) is often exclaimed after each move. Every grade has its own set of basic moves that must be learnt and performed at grading. It is not uncommon, however, for white belts to practice higher grade, even black belt, kihon during dojo practice. Though you will only be graded on your ability for your grade.</image:caption>

<image:title>Training Overview - Kata</image:title>
<image:caption>Katas are an ordered set of moves performed in a sequence. There are over 20 Katas in Kyokushin and you advance through the katas as you progress through your career. Much like with Kihon, you will be required to perform at least one new kata at every grading on top of demonstrating all the moves and subsequent kata from 10th Kyu (1st white belt) to your current grade. National and International Kata tournaments are annual in Kyokushin.</image:caption>

<image:title>Training Overview - Kumite</image:title>
<image:caption>Kumite is the one-on-one fighting performed in Kyokushin. Kyokushin is a full contact style of Karate. We train to build the body up to be able to withstand being hit. We are very respectful of our opponents ability so will only fight to the level at which you are ready. You will see karateka at Nintai fight will almost full strength but that doesn’t mean as a beginner you will receive the same. It is important you are comfortable fighting as it is a requirement of grading and you will build up as your experience, confidence and strength grows. Kumite fights are often a minute in dojo practice but can be 2 minutes or more. National and International Kumite tournaments are annual in Kyokushin.</image:caption>

<image:title>Training Overview - Stretching</image:title>

<image:title>Training Overview - Grading</image:title>
<image:caption>Dojo Grading is once every three to six months. More senior grades often have longer gaps between grading. Senpai will put your forward for a grading if both he feels you are ready. We are extremely fortunate to have Shihan Liam Keaveney (7th Dan) and Chairman of the British Karate Kyokushinkai (BKK) oversee our gradings at Nintai so an extremely high level is expected of our karateka (karate students).</image:caption>
